Should I tip my tattoo artist?

Once you’ve finished your tattoo and are ready to pay, you might find yourself asking “Do I tip my artist?” A tip can reflect the value you see in your artist, their work, and the time they put into your piece but it’s by no means required or should be requested. Tipping is an extremely kind gesture and though it’s appreciated, it’s never expected. Tattoos are expensive and artists understand that some clients save for months leading up to their appointment. Having this in mind, tips are graciously accepted no matter the amount.

There are no set rules when it comes to tipping your tattoo artist and unlike restaurants and bars, a standard 15-20% gratuity on top can be substantial in comparison. Instead, if and when you choose to tip your artist, you can base your tip on factors such as:

Affordability

Tattoo Quality

Time

Overall Experience

It’s also worth noting that tips don’t always come in the form of money. Some of the most thoughtful tips are tokens of appreciation related to interests shared throughout the appointment. Great examples we’ve been lucky to receive are favourite snacks and treats, plants, vinyl records and so on. Whatever it is, we can assure you that we are extremely grateful and appreciative. A client’s trust and dedication is all we ask, anything beyond that is a bonus.
